Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

Philosophy -

At Cagwin & Dorward, our first concern in our IPM program is to identify the unique goals for your landscape. Ultimately, we strive to create a landscape ecology which does not require synthetic pest controls.

Working in collaboration, we create a strategy that meets your site-specific needs with a balanced decision making process.

Biological Solutions -
Beneficial Insect Products and Applications

During this process, we consider the following:

  • Client pest threshold
  • Budget restrictions
  • Community thresholds
  • Soil Food Web health
  • Plant health
  • Intensity of infestation
  • Life cycle and needs of pests and predators
  • Disease infected plants
  • Available habitat for beneficial insects
  • Irrigation system condition
  • Nuances in the ecology dynamics

Collaborative IPM Project - Kentfield School Play Field

One example of our IPM efforts is the collaboration with Kentfield School District’s IPM Committee in Marin County.  We have worked with them to meet the high threshold of no pesticides, and using only a slow release fertilizer.  This play field has been maintained successfully for six years by meeting or exceeding the client’s expectations for color, growth, thickness, and weed management.

We have not sprayed for any of the six years.  The account manager attends the monthly IPM Committee meetings to share learning and strategies that deal with the landscape.  We currently are testing a Washington State Certified Organic fertilizer on site, and the IPM Committee is helping with the education of the community on the progress of the transition.
