Why not just send it all to the dump?

Because . . . about 1/3 of our waste is paper and paperboard, another 1/3 is yard and kitchen waste, the rest is divided among glass, metals, plastics, textiles, wood and other materials - Most all of these items are recyclable or compost-able.
Landfills cause soil and water degradation as well as habitat destruction - for humans too!! We have the opportunity to reduce so much of what we normally send to landfills. It only takes a small amount of effort. Here are some ways . . .

Reduce, Reduce, Reduce! There are many things you can do to reduce the amount of waste you produce.

Avoid food packaged in individual servings.
Buy in bulk. It saves money and the environment.
Buy multi-use items rather than single-use when possible.
Use your own bags for shopping.
Donate your old clothes to charity.
Buy beverages in refillable containers.
Use a durable refillable mug or glass at school or work.
Use rechargeable batteries.
Share your newspaper, magazines and books with a friend.
Wrap gifts in reusable bags or reused wrapping paper; consider a newspaper’s comics section
Rent items you use infrequently
Pack your lunch in reusable containers.
Buy products that contain recycled materials.
Use both sides of the paper when you can.
Encourage your friends and family to follow your good example.

Rethink Shopping - With practice, you can get pretty good at rethinking everything you consume. When you go shopping for food or clothing - Stop, rethink and ask yourself:

Where was this grown or made?
How far did it travel to get to the store?
Under what conditions did the laborers work?
Will its disposal be environmentally friendly?
Do I really need this?

Be creative. There are many more ways we can reduce the waste we produce.
