Do you know your 3 R's (sometimes 5)?
Reduce: To
decrease the amount of materials you use. For example; if you use
both sides of a paper, you are reducing the number of pages you need.
Reuse: To use
materials over again for the same purpose or for something
else. For example; you can reuse a coffee can as a container
for nails. On a larger scale, you can reupholster or paint furniture
before it's so "far gone" you want to take it to the dump.
Recycle: To use materials over again to
manufacture a new product. Paper, for example, is made into new
paper products, while some plastics can be turned into things like
carpet and fleece clothing.
Rethink: Consider
your impact when making purchasing decisions. For example;
buy only what you'll use, preferably in bulk or concentrates,
packaged in recyclable materials. Take your purchase home without using store
bags (bring your own reusable bags or nothing at all).
Respect: Respecting the Earth and every living being on it begins with self-respect.
Our actions are an outward reflection of how we consider our world and our
place in it. Every choice we make changes the
world. Respect of family, friends, communities and the environment evolves from
practicing positive change for ourselves. As more share the same values,
the more we, along with the Earth, can recover and thrive.
