GO! - Carbon Conscious Challenge - Regular Vehicle Maintenance

Wondering how you can further reduce your Carbon Footprint? It's as easy as "1,2,3"!

  1. Get a tune-up. Whether you do it yourself or go to a mechanic, a tune-up can increase your fuel economy. Follow the owner's manual guidelines. Be sure to check for worn spark plugs, low transmission fluid and dragging brakes. Replace the air filter if needed. Make sure all used vehicle fluids are recycled or disposed of safely.

  2. Keep your tires properly inflated. Properly inflated tires can increase gas mileage 10% to 30%. Tires, originally intended for the vehicle, should be inflated to the pressure recommended by the car manufacturer. This information can be found inside the door frame or in the owner's manual of your car. For every 3 pounds below recommended pressure, fuel economy goes down by about 1%. Tires can lose about 1 pound of pressure in a month, so check the air pressure regularly and always before going on a long trip or carrying heavy loads.

A common misperception is looking to the pressure listed on the tire sidewall. This is the maximum tire pressure (the tire pressure required to carry the maximum load of the tire). It is not the manufacturer's recommended tire pressure for everyday use.

An exception to this, are tires mounted on different rims (low profile, lift kit, etc.) or for a specific activity (certain off-road, sand or icy terrain). Get the correct tire inflation from the installer or tire manufacturer.

Under-inflated and miss-aligned tires can also detract from handling, safety, and how long the tires will last. Have your wheels aligned and tires rotated to save these investments from poor performance and premature wear.

  3. Change the oil. In addition to making your vehicle last longer, replacing the oil and oil filter regularly will also help fuel economy. Check your owner's manual to find out how often to change your oil (service stations may tell you to change it more than necessary - learn more about the 3000 Oil Change Mile Myth here).

If you change the oil yourself, be sure to collect and dispose of the used oil properly. Take your old oil to your local recycling center or corner service station.

If you have a service station do it, ask if they recycle their used oil. Ask for recycled oil as a replacement.  While you're there, have your vehicle's emission control system checked periodically, as well.

Regular maintenance helps improve fuel-efficiency and reduces emissions.  When just 1% of car owners properly maintain their cars, nearly one billion pounds of CO2 are kept out of the atmosphere.
