Beat the Heat, Wash in Cold:  Wash four out of five loads of laundry in cold water.

It's simple, just push the "cold/cold" button on your washing machine for 80% of the loads you do this month. Keep on washing those sheets and other special items in hot or warm water if you want, but by doing 4 out of 5 loads in cold water you'll cut 72 pounds of CO2 emissions in one month alone.

Here the facts…

Water heating accounts for approximately 19% of total home energy use. Today's more efficient washing machines and laundry detergents make it possible to wash both white and colored clothes clean in cold water. Unless you are dealing with tough stains, washing in hot water is not always necessary.

Climate scientists say we need to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050 in order to avoid most of the catastrophic impacts of climate change. If we emit 4% less carbon dioxide this year than we did last year, 4% less next year than this year, and keep up that momentum for the next four decades, we'll achieve 80% cuts by 2050.
