GO! - Carbon Conscious Challenge - Is Your Truck Overweight?

There are many risks to being overweight. These risks are not limited to sentient beings, such as ourselves, but the vehicles we drive, as well.

At Blackhawk, Shaun Pairish and crew are doing something about this -

"I wanted to share with you, gas mileage as it relates to truck weight. We spent some time cleaning out all our crew trucks and reorganizing them. We did this exercise to be more efficient -

In one truck, we removed about 150 lbs. of trash! It consisted of broken parts, accumulated over time and trash picked up but not removed from the truck. For this truck, that weight was the equivalent of another person riding in the truck."

Doing the math . . .
The Government estimates that an extra 100 lbs. in a vehicle can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 2%.

With the other 3 trucks carrying 50 - 75 lbs. each of unnecessary weight, Blackhawk's "overweight" total compromised their fuel efficiency by more than 6%.

In vehicles that average 12 MPG, with an average tank holding 15 gals., that's an overall loss of 48 miles, wasted in excess burned gasoline.

Looking at it as "the tank half full", Blackhawk just made themselves an extra 48 miles between each fleet fill-up!

"We plan on going through this exercise about every three months. Every little bit helps. I wanted to share this with you as maybe there is some benefit to our trucks in other Yards as well.

Thank you,   Shaun"

Blackhawk is not one of our larger yards. Imagine what might be saved if each yard performed this exercise. Now, add that to our weekly tire inflation checks and safe/efficient driving habits.
