GO! - Coastal Cleanup Day, Saturday, September 25, 2010

Becoming part of the Solution to Marine Pollution!

Cagwin & Dorward's Green Office Team (the GO Team) once again coordinated a C&D community service event in conjunction with the California Coastal Cleanup Day.

This was C&D's 3rd year of volunteering to rid our beaches of trash and debris.

Just how big is the problem of pollution in our oceans? Click here to learn more about the impact of our disposable ways and to see what people are doing to understand the problem and develop a solution.

The event was held Saturday, September 25th, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., throughout California.

This year's theme: BYOB, no kidding! To reach their own zero waste goals, the event organizers asked participants to come with their own trash bags, buckets and gloves. We're perfectly suited to meet that challenge!

C&D Sponsored Locations:

Groups convened at 8:45 a.m. at two sites:

North Bay, Brighton Beach, Bolinas - (Directions)

It was a surprisingly beautiful, clear day at the beach, with a variety of interesting items the crew uncovered.

Afterwards, participants enjoyed a C&D sponsored After Trash Bash at The Parkside, in Stinson Beach, as a "thank you" to participants for their efforts towards this important cause.

South Bay, Seaside State Beach, Monterey - (Directions)

This year, the Save Our Shores (SOS) organization, sponsored the local event. Throughout the year, this popular beach is visited by many trash conscience people. This made for a more focused effort of trash collection for our crew.

Afterwards, everyone gathered at Lorrie's house for an After Trash BBQ Bash to celebrate and share stories of their adventures.

Upon official event check-in, Site Captains provide pencils and a special data sheet to tally collected items.

Completed data sheets must be returned to the Site Captain after the cleanup.

Data collected goes into the Ocean Conservancy’s international database, and is used to identify sources of debris and to help devise solutions to the marine debris problem.

This data continues to show that 60 - 80 percent of the trash collected originates inland, following street storm drains into water routes, ending at the beaches and into our oceans.

What participants have accomplished has been called "the largest garbage collection" by Guinness Book of World Records.

If you're curious about what it's like to be excited about finding a "cash" of cigarette butts, please consider joining us next September.
