ACCIDENT PREVENTION COMMITTEE & PROGRAM

PROGRAM INTRODUCTION:

In order to enhance employee well being and working conditions by reducing accidents, Cagwin & Dorward has devised a proactive accident prevention program. The program is comprised of two key employee groups: An on-going Accident Prevention Committee, responsible for creating, monitoring and improving safety initiatives, and a temporary Safety Design Team, formed as needed to address specific safety problems that require in-depth study to be resolved.

The program’s objective is to prevent accidents by focusing on safe work behaviors in order to reduce on-the-job injuries. The concept is that use of properly designed equipment and implementation of specific safe work behaviors will prevent accidents.

ACCIDENT PREVENTION COMMITTEE (APC):

A maximum of twelve members serve on the APC, including an owner-sponsor and the company safety officer. Members are a representation of all departments, at various levels, and are responsible for the overall company safety program. The committee reviews current issues, develops initiatives to foster a long-range safety culture and evaluates employee safety suggestions and concerns.

Members also serve as safety representatives at their respective service centers and are responsible for spot-checking work in progress to verify whether safe behaviors are being followed.

APC members meet once a month, to see how effectively safety initiatives are being integrated into the culture. They analyze accident reports, tailgate meeting attendance, and discuss field behaviors. Members recommend changes in work practices, create new safety initiatives, and develop incentive-reward programs.

Members serve staggered terms, and new volunteers are rotated in to contribute their perspectives and experience, in order to maintain an energetic, responsive safety culture.
