Business - Safety

The Accident Prevention Committee has created the following to accompany proposals for work to perspective customers. This is intended to provide detailed information about our safety practices and convey the level of seriousness in which we take work safety.

CAGWIN & DORWARD SAFETY INITIATIVES

In addition to the formal safety programs required by statute and regulatory agencies, Cagwin & Dorward has implemented numerous initiatives we believe contribute to the enviable safety record we enjoy in the landscape industry – especially for an operation that includes construction and tree care departments. Our people are proud of their recent achievement of breaking our own safety record that stood for over 15 years.

Cagwin & Dorward provides a drug free workplace. All new employees are drug screened, and retesting is performed in the event of injury, property damage, or reasonable suspicion. In order to ensure consistency in weekly safety meetings, a 52 week tailgate safety program was created that matches topics to seasonal conditions and tasks. Program topics are tailored to address individual department exposures.

New drivers see a safe driving video designed for the green industry, take a written retention test, then participate in a check ride to demonstrate the key safety points covered by the video and written test. Cagwin & Dorward enrolls all employee drivers in the DMV Pull Notice program in order to maintain current driving records.

Our orientation program directly addresses safety issues in the following areas through oral presentation, reading material and video:

· Company Policies · Facility Layout · First Aid
· Equipment Use · Site Tours · Work Processes

New employees do not operate power equipment until they have seen a safety video, and received training at their respective dispatch facilities. Basic competency is demonstrated before working on customer landscapes. Once in the field, they receive hands-on production methods and safety information from their Crew Leaders or Foreman before working independently.

In response to injuries, an "Accident Alert" describing the incident, its prevention, and its effect on worker and company is emailed to all managers to include for discussion at the next tailgate meeting. Every dispatch facility has a Safety Center where accident alerts, bulletins, posters, and a safety suggestion box is posted. We have a strong return to work policy to keep our people on the job while accommodating restrictions.

Cagwin & Dorward endorses a behavior-based approach to safety. To promote our belief that safe behaviors create a safe work place, we formed a team of field workers to identify the root source of our three major injury categories. They devised 6 to 8 behaviors to prevent those injuries, which were added to training materials.

In the interest of reducing strains while stressing safety, our Accident Prevention Committee, in conjunction with field personnel, developed and deployed a daily stretching program. Every morning before dispatch, all field personnel and their managers participate in a 5‑minute stretching exercise. We believe the daily safety reinforcement that results is just as important as the physical benefit.
