Bay Friendly Landscaping Team - Conserving Water

What is Conserving Water? When conserving water, whether natural or irrigated, make every drop count. Look at all aspects of water conservation as a holistic approach, starting with building a healthy soil, having appropriate plants and then looking at the irrigation components (See list below).

  1. Create drought resistant soils with compost & mulch
  2. Grow California natives or Mediterranean plants
  3. Minimize the lawn
  4. Implement hydrozoning - group plants by water needs
  5. Design for on-site rainwater collection, recycled water and/or graywater use
  6. Design and install high efficiency irrigation systems
  7. Install a dedicated meter to monitor landscape water use
  8. Manage irrigation according to need
  9. Maintain the irrigation system so every drop counts
  10. Request an irrigation audit

What we learned: "This class really brought to my attention that when you want to start to conserve water, start with looking at the soil.  Know your soil type and infiltration rate. Use compost to keep  the soil microbes healthy which in return will increase the overall soil health and increase the water holding capacity and reduce runoff. Think about ways to effectively store the water on site, then make sure your irrigation systems and management are in line". - Lorrie Harter
