Bay Friendly Landscaping Team - Landscaping Locally

What is Landscaping Locally? Landscaping locally starts with an assessment of the unique qualities of the landscape. The key is to choose methods that work with local resources. Focus on strategies to reduce the amount of energy and waste that are needed to install and maintain the site. By doing this, the landscaper is making an effort to respect the natural characteristics of our region. This contributes to the health and biodiversity of the SF Bay Ecosystem.

  1. Evaluate climate, exposure and topography
  2. Assess the soil and test drainage
  3. Survey and protect flora & fauna
  4. Consider the potential for fire
  5. Use local, natural plant communities as models
  6. Consider local suppliers for plant, compost, mulch, and other materials
  7. Evaluate how the owner and community will find value in using the space in order to improve community involvement

What we learned: “This class taught me the importance of using a soil test as an indicator of soil health. I think we have a great opportunity at Cagwin to integrate soil tests as part of our fertilization program. Rather than apply fertilizers on a pre-determined schedule, a soil analysis of the site will identify exactly what the soil needs. Two of our vendors (Lesco and Target) provide this basic service.

You can also request the lab give organic recommendations with synthetics as a secondary option. Then apply only what is deficient. This practice reduces detrimental impact on the environment resulting from over fertilization with synthetics and could also reduce our material costs."  - Deb Lane

I learned that what we decide to purchase for plant material, soil enhancers, mulches, compost, tools, and irrigation supplies really affects the impact on local environmental, economic, and social systems.  Our decisions help systems become healthier by adding money to local businesses, reducing pollution from transport of materials and petroleum based fertilizers, reducing water usage from our local aquifers and rivers, and more community enjoyment from landscapes that create habitat for many insects, animals, and people.

Landscaping Locally means being a part of the local cycles of life and helping to make them become more rich, abundant, and alive with opportunity and health!”  - Jake Voit
