Bay Friendly Landscaping Team - Landscaping Less to the Landfill

What is Landscaping Less to the Landfill? This concept consists of planning alternative methods to reduce waste. Selecting the right plant for the right place, watering and fertilizing judiciously, adopting natural pruning practices and leaving plant material on site are all important ways to reduce the tons of plant debris that end up in landfills.

  1. Select appropriate plants:
    A. Choose plants to match the microclimate & soil conditions
    B. Choose plants that can grow to their natural size in the space allotted them
    C. Replace sheared hedges with plants that can grow to their natural shape & size
    D. Do not plant invasive species
  2. Keep plant debris on site:
    A. Grasscycle
    B. Produce mulch from plant debris
    C. Compost plant debris
  3. Prune selectively and properly
  4. Water and fertilize judiciously
  5. Use goats for controlling weeds and creating firebreaks
  6. Use salvaged items & recycled content materials
  7. Reduce and recycle construction waste
  8. Separate plant debris for clean green discount

What we learned: "Changing behavioral practices in the landscape can decrease our impact on the landfill.

Excessive shearing not only creates unnecessary debris but weakens plant health - allowing pests to take hold and flourish. Instead, selective pruning helps a plant to thrive by eliminating damaged or diseased sections while reducing debris for the landfill.

It is also important to consider creative ways to leave plant waste on the job site and reuse materials.

A conscious planning effort can be applied by both the Contractor and Homeowner with tremendous results".
- Alexander Navarro
