Bay Friendly Landscaping Team - Creating, Protecting Wildlife Habitat

What is Creating & Protecting Wildlife Habitat? Creating and protecting wildlife habitat is one of the many important factors for making the SF Bay Watershed a unique and beautiful place. In addition to parks and open space, commercial and residential landscapes play an intricate part in preserving wildlife habitat. A landscape dedicated to creating and protecting wildlife can provide food, shelter, water, and even nesting sites for birds, butterflies and beneficial insects.

  1. Diversify
  2. Choose California natives first
  3. Provide water & shelter
  4. Eliminate the use of pesticides
  5. Conserve or restore natural areas & wildlife corridors

What we learned: “Most conventional landscapes do not create wildlife habitat or help sustain wildlife populations. Converting a conventional landscape to one that will help sustain wildlife habitat and populations begins with educating the customer.

A good place to start would be to use California native plant species that will attract beneficial insects and useing IPM practices. Also, provide food and shelter for wildlife by adding a pond, bird bath or waterfall to the landscape.

Wildlife Habitat is often an overlooked piece of conventional landscape. Cagwin and Dorward has the opportunity of being one of the pioneers for using these practices."  - Tim Annear

"Landscapes as part of the eco-system provide valuable services. "Natures Services" such as climate regulation, clean air, clean water improve quality of life for all time!

Conventional landscaping practices often are detrimental to the wildlife habitat of our eco-systems, instead of the enhancing force.  Bay-friendly and sustainable landscapes can be a supporting function critical to nature in harnessing and providing  environmental services for all forms of life.

At Cagwin and Dorward, we can be better stewards of our ecosystems with the use of sustainable land practices that will create and protect our habitat for all forms of life for all generations."  - Kurt Heitmeyer
