Cannas
are one of the most exciting plants that can add special interest to the garden.
Their requirements are few. The results are spectacular. Cannas
offer exotic tropical foliage and wide range of flora colors.
Special Interest: In California, these plants are not grazed by deer. Pests are few with the exception of snails and slugs that are easily controlled with pet and soil friendly product called . Sluggo's active ingredient is iron phosphate.
Propagation: Cannas may be easily moved around the garden as their roots are predominantly rhizomes. Hybrids may be produced by planting their seeds.
Flower: Colors range from deep red, red, pink, salmon pink, orange, yellow, pale yellow, and mixed colors.
Cannas flower from mid spring through the end of autumn.
Size: Cannas range from 18 inches to 16 feet pending species.
Water: Normal water to wet conditions
Soil: Clay, Loam, or Sandy - soil needs to breath for plants to tolerate wet conditions. Soil conditions vary pending species. Some species originating from Georgia or Florida are require bog conditions.
Frost: The leaves and stems of Cannas are susceptible to frost and need only to be cut back to the ground and new foliage will quickly regenerate in spring.
Light: Cannas prefer full sun to moderate shade ( 3 hours of direct sun). Blooms more frequently with more light.
