The opossum is about the size of a large house cat, gray in color. The long, narrow face is white which accents the black, beady eyes. Its lower legs and feet are black. The feet look like little hands. The hind feet have claw less thumbs and can be used for clasping. The rough skinned tail is prehensile and is used as an aid in clinging to things. Except for its color, the opossum resembles somewhat a large, slow moving rat. Its long, round tail is nearly hairless. Its papery, thin ears are small and round. The resemblance to a rat ends at the mouth, for in its primitive wide spread jaws are 50 teeth; more than any other native mammal in North America. The opossum's fur is rather coarse, its long guard hairs give the fur a rather shaggy appearance.
There
are many species of opossum worldwide, but only one species (Didelphis marsupialis)
occurs in the United States. The opossum lacks a tolerance for cold weather
so is restricted to warmer climates. Records show that it was first introduced
into California in the early 1900's near San Jose. It has adapted well to
this new environment for it has increased in numbers rapidly and perhaps,
with the help of man, it now occupies most of the habitat that is suitable.
It is now found throughout the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys; in the foothills of the western slopes of the Sierra, up to 3000 feet elevation, and in the Coast Range west of the Mojave Desert, from Mendocino County south to the Mexican border. Since the opossum does not hibernate, it is doubtful it could exist where snow lies deep for long periods.
Trapping and removal of opossums can be necessary. We can coordinate safe and effective capture of the creature with local authorities and suggest remedies to limit their access to your property.
